An Australian Senate inquiry chaired by the Coalition’s Bill Heffernan is looking into the grain handling sector. It has heard from grains president Ian Pinner of US-based Archer Daniels Midland, which is set to take over GrainCorp. Others to address the inquiry will be Australian Competition & Consumer Commission staff and major wheat producer Ron Greentree, but commodities trading house Glencore Xstrata has said it will not be able co-operate. Some farmers fear that the GrainCorp acquisition will restrict access to the port facilities of the listed group.
