Punjab Food Department (PFD) crossed one million mark of procuring grains during the ongoing ‘Wheat procurement drive 2014’ on Sunday when its total procurement reached 1,100,429 tonnes. Sources in the food department told Business Recorder that the pace of wheat procurement is also picking up pace and it touched almost two million per-day mark. On Sunday the centers across the province purchased 192,322 tonnes of wheat from the growers.
Total gunny bags so far had been distributed by the department had reached over 2.55 million tons while on Sunday it distributed gunny bags sufficient to pack 138,044 tonnes of wheat. Meanwhile a spokesman of the Punjab Food Department (PFD) strongly negated that like-minded people have been included in the gunny bags distribution committees. He said monitoring committees have been constituted under District Co-ordination Officers (DCOs) at District, Tehsil and Center levels. He said gunny bags were being distributed to growers on ‘first come-first serve’ basis under a very transparent manner. He also said any complaint received in this regard was also being resolved forthwith.
