Rajasthan is likely to witness a dip in its total food grain production for the year 2015-16. In the second advance estimates released by the agriculture ministry, the total crop production in the state will be around 1.75 crore tonnes, a decline of 3.78 lakh tonnes over the previous year’s production of 1.78 cr tonnes.
Attributing recent unseasonal rain and hailstorm, minister of state for agriculture, Mohanbhai Kundaria pointed out that total food grain production will come down compared to previous year. “Rain and hailstorm have adversely affected production of rabi crops and further aggravated the overall production of agricultural crops during 2014-15,” said Kundaria.
This year, total area for rabi crop in the state was targeted at 94,52,000 hectares, of which around 85,00,000 hectares were covered in December. The total area extended as many farmers waited till December end for some rain to sow their crop.
Officials claim that a short spell of rain in January first week came as a boon for rabi that initially triggered the estimates of production. But with weather taking a turn the situation reversed.
Riding on the hope of mass production of wheat and excess stock from past year’s production, the state government even lowered its target of wheat procurement from 2015-16 season. Rajasthan was to buy 1.8 million tonnes (mt), against 2.15 mt in 2014-15 season.
As per preliminary information received through girdawari, damages to barley, isabgol and mustard can be up to 75%. Wheat too has been badly affected. According to officials an exact estimate is not possible at the moment as total losses are still being tabulated.
“Indication in the girdawari reports suggest that Kota, Baran, Ajmer and Bhilwara districts are severely affected. In several villages damages have went up to 80-85% while in most places crops were destroyed in pockets of land,” said the official of agriculture department.
Total production of food grain in the country is estimated at 257.07 million tonnes which is lower by 3.20% than the record production of 265.57 million tonnes of food grain during 2013-14.
