India’s Department of Agriculture & Cooperation reported on Aug. 17 that India’s total food grains production for the 2014-15 season is estimated at 252.68 million tonnes, which is down 12.36 million tonnes compared to last year’s total of 265.04 million tonnes. The decline of grain production in the 2014-15 harvest is attributed to a bad monsoon season, unseasonal rains and hailstorms during February and March.
The department estimate total production of rice at 104.8 million tonnes, which is down by 1.85 million tonnes compared to last year’s record production of 106.65 million tonnes.
The production of wheat is estimated at 88.94 million tonnes, which is down 6.91 million tonnes compared to last year’s production of 95.85 million tonnes.
The total production of coarse cereals is estimated at 41.75 million tonnes, down by 1.54 million tonnes from the 2013-14 season. Production of pulses is estimated at 17.2 million tonnes, down by 2.05 million tonnes. With a decrease of 6.07 million tonnes over the last year, total production of oilseeds in India is estimated at 26.68 million tonnes.
