A programme is under way under which EU exporters can sell 150,000 tonnes of high quality EU refined sugar duty-free to Algeria, European trade sources said on Thursday.
They said the 45-ICUMSA sugar for Algeria was part of 650,000 tonnes of out-of-quota sugar export licences so far approved by EU authorities in 2015/16.
The programme was expected to attract strong interest from trade houses in the EU and the sugar was likely to be delivered to Algeria in the next few months, the trade sources said.
The buyers could be in a position to sell the sugar at comfortable premiums in the Algerian domestic market, they said.
